Commentary

Here I am, it’s 6:30 in the morning and I’m quietly working on the computer and drinking my coffee with the news softly playing behind me. I’m only half listening to stories about the Olympics, the election, police activity on 280, and the weather. Suddenly, I hear Guns N Roses playing. I turn to get a better look at the TV, and am surprised to see a quick story about the release of Chinese Democracy. That’s right, it looks like the album that was supposed to be released sometime around my junior year in high school, just might make it into stores shortly after my own child starts school. The irony is not lost on me.

Everyone’s favorite procrastinator, Axl Rose, is in talks with both Wal-Mart and Best Buy for an exclusive release. A worldwide conventional release would follow. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the news story. We’ve been hearing “stories” about Chinese Democracy for years now and I have a hard time believing that the album even exists. Well until I heard the rest of this news story.

It has also been announced that a track off Chinese Democracy will be on Rock Band 2. The song even has a name, “Shackler’s Revenge.” Does this mean… it’s real? Does the Holy Grail of rock albums really exist? Or is it just one song that Axl is simply using to toy with us more? I guess the answer remains to be seen. I’m not going to count on it, but I will remain hopeful. Though I think I’d be just as happy if Axl were to just suck it up and become the singer for Velvet Revolver.
