Television Review

With the saturation of reality programs on television, I’ve turned to TV of the past to curb my appetite for the boob tube. After searching through my vast collection of box sets, I discovered one of my all-time favorites, “Freaks and Geeks.” Unfortunately, the show only ran for one season (consisting of 12 episodes), but this ‘dramedy’ was simply brilliant.

One of the most distinguishing aspects of “Freaks and Geeks” was its amazing soundtrack. The selection of music established the tone for the show and warrants some recognition. It captured the true spirit of this ingenious series and highlighted the humor and intelligence of the characters by serving as the musical backdrop for each episode. For me, the most poignant scenes of the show coupled with timely song placement is what defined it as original. The musical cues are often hilarious and rarely gratuitous. So, if you are a fan of this cult classic, then you already understand what I mean. If not, I recommend checking it out because you won’t be disappointed.

“Bad Reputation” by Joan Jett

The opening theme of each episode is played as the cast is having yearbook photos taken. It perfectly captures the theme of the entire series. Let’s face it, unfortunately, reputations are a big part of high school life, and this song reminded me of that the first time that I saw the pilot for “Freaks and Geeks.”

Episode 100 “Pilot” - Come Sail Away by Styx

A little history: Sam Weir has a huge crush on Cindy Sanders and finally gets the nerve to ask her to be his date for the dance. Well, Cindy (a cheerleader) already has a date, but says she’ll save a dance for Sam (a Geek). This song plays at the dance when Sam walks up to ask Cindy for that “dance.” Watch the video and about halfway through you’ll understand how this moment sets the stage for the Sam and Cindy saga. Classic!

Episode 101 “Beers and Weirs” - “Jesus is Just Alright” by Sarah Hagan & Jason Segal

Yeah this song is strange on any day. But, it’s appearance in the “Beers and Weirs” episode is hilarious. Lindsey Weir (a former geek trying to be a freak) agrees to have a kegger while her parents are out of town. Millie (big ass geek), her neighbor and old friend, shows up at the party advocating abstinence, which isn’t really necessary since Sam and his geek friends, Neil and Bill (my favorite!), switch out the keg to a non-alcoholic beer. Anyway, this part with Millie singing on the piano says a lot about her character and her constant references to Jesus and God. When Nick Andopolis (a Freak) joins in with gusto, I might add, it helps explain his own character who has a passion for drums and is ALL about the music — even if it’s Hagan and Segal. Hah
