Z Rock on Independent Film ChannelBy

I always find myself somewhat conflicted when it comes to those reality shows known as “semi-scripted.” I think in most cases (”The Two Coreys,” “Hogan Knows Best,” etc.) they tend to fall flat. Where in other cases there seems to be perfect balance and the show comes off as quite entertaining (Gene Simmons’s “Family Jewels,” for instance). Well IFC is throwing their hat into the ring with a show that seems to be more scripted than not, but based on the very real adventures of the rock band ZO2, called Z Rock.
Badass rock stars by night, children’s singing group by day, a hilarious concept that is actually not that uncommon. The Imagination Movers, The Wiggles, Dan Zane, and many other children’s artists have a similar background. Z Rock, which premiered on the Independent Film Channel (IFC) this past week Saturday, follows the antics of the guys (the actual band ZO2) as they balance the late night rock star life with the day job of being a children’s group that gigs at birthday parties. “Badass rock stars by night, children’s singing group by day, a hilarious concept that is actually not that uncommon.” Cameos include John Popper, Dave Navarro, and a hilarious scene with Skid Row’s own, Sebastian Bach. The show will definitely appeal to rock fans and parents who will more than get the tongue in cheek subplots of the ever-fickle children’s party scene. IFC is listing it as a comedy, and so far I’m betting it’s going to be. ZO2, in real life, has found some success, opening for KISS in 2004 and again, currently. This is why the show walks the line between reality and scripted TV. Either way, it’s interesting to watch a rock group on the possible verge of celebrity status, walk. The members of ZO2, which includes brothers Paulie Z, (vocals, guitar) and David Z (vocals, bass) and long time friend, Joey Cassata (drums, vocals) have all found some success in their previous ventures. David was formerly the bassist for the world renowned Trans-Siberian Orchestra, while Joey had a highly successful run with the Blue Man Group, and Paulie is the voice behind many of Howard Stern’s infamous song parodies. Their new album, Ain’t It Beautiful is available now. To top it off, these guys do rock. The influence of Soundgarden (Chris Cornell look out!) Alice In Chains, and Stone Temple Pilots infuse this band with a heavy sound and some badass harmonies. Check them out on tour with KISS, on MySpace, or for the next nine Saturdays on IFC. I’m putting money on the idea that by this time next year ZO2 will be a household name.
