Iron Man: Feast For The Eyes AND The Ears

I’ll just state here and now that if you ever want to make a movie, there is one simple way to ensure that I will remain completely glued to my seat. Start the movie by playing AC/DC. Anything by AC/DC will guarantee that I’m yours for life. Or for the next 2 hours or so anyway.
Jon Favreau and the bad-asses over at Marvel had me at Back In Black this weekend when my son and I ventured to the theater to see Marvel’s much anticipated Iron Man. I’m a HUGE believer in soundtrack and movie scores playing a big part in the overall quality of a movie. This is no exception. A bad-ass Superhero like Iron Man deserved a bad-ass score, and he got one.
Past Marvel movies have hired bands whose commercial success and popularity coincide with the release date of their latest movie. What MTV is selling, Marvel is always quick to be buying. Not the case with Iron Man. Sorry Nickleback, Sabbath and AC/DC are driving this bad boy to the box office this summer.
There is nothing cooler than a movie that uses material that is truly relevant and true to the theme of the movie, not just what’s popular. With Iron Man, Marvel has cashed in on a built in audience, metal heads. Iron Man is our flawed, dark, sarcastic, Superhero. A Superhero we can relate to. A Superhero who listens to AC/DC and Sabbath.
So aside from the obvious tunes we hear in the trailer, Marvel even busted out some Suicidal Tendencies right smack in the middle of the movie! Oh, and can I get an Amen for the absolute perfect use of Audioslave? To top it off Jon Favreau took a chance with composer RAMIN DJAWADI, who ended up creating a perfect rock oriented score that perfectly fit the feel of our Heavy metal Superhero.
Three days and over $200,000,000 later, I have only one thing to say to Robert Downey Jr., Favreau, and the guys over at Marvel. When is Iron Man 2 going to be here? You know what, that’s OK, it doesn’t matter. Whenever it is, I’ll be there. I’ll be there with my eyes AND ears wide open, ready for more.
Given that you rarely hear AC/DC in movies, commercials, etc., bless the Marvel people for paying whatever they did for the licensing. I think AC/DC last placed their music in Last Action Hero (new song), but that was a long time ago… I’m sure I’ve missed some placements between then and now.
Well none stand out in my mind, so all my props are going to Marvel. With all the news about Captain America, Thor, The Avengers, and of course Iron Man 2 that’s come out in the last couple days, we can only hope Marvel keeps making similar choices!
Does this mean that you watched Maximum Overdrive, which featured big chunks of AC/DC music?
Are you kidding? Maximum Overdrive is practically required watching where I come from…
Whether you actually enjoy it or not…
