Today, the first single off The Cure’s upcoming album was released.  Initially titled, “Please Project”, the single now called “The Only One”  features the B-side NY Trip.   The British icons announced earlier this year that a new single is scheduled for release on the 13th of each month.  One may wonder why the 13th of each month?

The hype is centered around the release of their 13th studio album on September 13, 2008  which will be out on Suretone/Geffen Records.  The forthcoming record is the band’s first album of new music since 2004.   Yay!!

Being a cure fanatic, I couldn’t wait for today to arrive and jump on iTunes at a chance to snag the digital download.   Shortly after listening to the intro, I realized they played the song back in September ‘07 at a concert I attended at the Bay Area’s Shoreline Amphitheatre.  Much to my dismay, I wasn’t impressed with the new sound back then, and unfortunately, it hasn’t grown on me yet.

I guess if you’re one of those that like the bubble gum pop sounding Cure tracks found on newer albums, you’ll dig the single.  As for me, I’m an old school depress the heck out of me Cure Fan.  I’m not saying change isn’t good, but personally, I’m just not feeling a connection to the track.  I hope this single isn’t a sure sign of what the new album will sound like.

Nonetheless, I’ll be ready to snag the next single on June 13th!!!  I mean, it’s The Cure for gods sakes!

The band recently kicked off their US tour to support the new album on May 9th, and I’ve already got my tickets for a show at the end of May.    So, more thoughts to come……
